The 8d Problem Solving Techniques focus on primarily team orientated problem solving and is normally implemented in a business situation. The 8d Problem Solving Techniques refers to an eight step discipline, (hence the 8d) for rectifying problems. It is not; however, without its merits when it comes to an individual and it is certain that anyone can learn a thing or two from the 8d Problem Solving Techniques. The first step in the 8d Problem Solving Techniques is to build a team. It is important to put together the right group of people with the necessary mix of skills and authority to resolve the issue. The second step is to describe the problem. You cannot fix a problem if you do not know it is there. It is important in this step to describe and quantify the problem completely. In this step, it is often advisable to use some sort of checklist when listing all of the details of the particular problem. The third step in the 8d Problem Solving Techniques is to implement a quick fix. Remember, this step it is vital to put the temporary fix in place and monitor it carefully to insure it is not making the problem worse. It may seem like putting a band-aid on a broken leg, but remember, it is only temporary. Fourth in the process is to eliminate the root cause. This may require a bit of time. Often times there are many issues and problems that make seeing the root cause difficult. The root cause is there, it just may take a little time to uncover. The fifth step in the 8d Problem Solving Techniques is to verify corrective action. Now that you now know what the real problem is, how do you fix it? At this point, it is important to remember that what ever you and your team decide is the best way to fix the problem, make sure the fix does not have any undesirable side affects. The sixth step in the 8d Problem Solving Techniques is to implement a permanent fix. This is an easy step relatively speaking. You have done the hard part in figuring out what the problem is; now you just have to take care of it. The seventh step is to prevent it from happening again. Maybe a better training manual, or advance training will help. Whatever your team decides, it is vital that you make the most of this particular step. The eighth and final step is to celebrate your success. You and your team have tackled a problem, considered it carefully, and have solved the issue. It is time to enjoy the fruits of your labor. |
